A Brief History of Pizza

Gourmet pizza, Roma or Verona style pizza or Pancrocchio? We may not know how to choose the pizza we love the most, but we’d certainly eat it every day! Join us with discovering the history of this tasty food that is loved all over the world.

Pizza has an ancient history that originates on the coasts of the placid Mediterranean Sea. Originally, pizza was considered peasant food and was only topped with cheese and basil. Over time, pizza became very popular in the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. If you would like to experience this original pizza flavor we recommend you try the Ci Pizza Gourmet Bianca, which combines a soft dough topped with fresh mozzarella, extra virgin olive oil and basil.

The first mention of the word, “pizza,” dates back to 998 near Gaeta, a coastal town on the Tyrrhenian Sea. The pizza, as we know it today, did not appear until 1889. A Neapolitan chef, Raffaele Esposito, had the ingenuity to top the simple but richly flavored dough with tomato, mozzarella and basil, creating the iconic Margherita pizza.

Chef Raffaele chose this name to pay homage to Queen Margherita of Savoy, who ruled over the city of Naples at the time. The ingredients were chosen, not only for their goodness, but also for their colors which symbolize the colors of the Italian flag. At Ci Gusta, Pizza Margherita is always on the menu! Try our Roma and Vernona style pizza version to taste these simple but delicious ingredients on a thick crust that is soft on the inside but crispy on the outside.

From its humble beginnings, pizza has become popular throughout the world and in many different cultures. Master pizza makers enjoy customizing this popular dish with creative and flavorful toppings. If you want to try a pizza that is a little different from the norm, we recommend you try our Ci Pizza Chicken.  This pizza is topped with chicken strips on a base of tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and peppers that have been topped with a sprinkling of paprika and extra virgin olive oil.

Come to Ci Gusta to discover all the goodness of our pizzas!
